United States
The land of the outlet mall: global brands at their home prices, plus Americana you can't get anywhere else — just remember sales tax is added at the register.
Tax-free / duty-free
None — the US has no national VAT/GST and no nationwide tourist tax refund. Unlike Europe or Asia, there is no US-wide scheme to reclaim tax when you fly out. Shelf prices exclude sales tax, which varies by state and city (e.g. ~8.9% in New York City, ~9.5% in Los Angeles) and is added at the register. Five states charge no state sales tax at all: Oregon, Delaware, New Hampshire, Montana and Alaska (some Alaska localities add a small tax). Only Texas and Louisiana run limited private 'tax back' programs for international visitors, handled by companies like TaxFree Shopping at select malls/airports — they take a processing fee, require original receipts, your passport and departure proof, and many purchases don't qualify.
What to buy in United States
- iPhone 17 Pro (256GB) (Apple) — 1099 USD — Apple's US prices are the global floor — the same 17 Pro costs ~35-40% more in India and ~30% more in the UK even after adding US sales tax.
- MacBook Air 13-inch (latest M-series) (Apple) — 999 USD — US Mac pricing beats the UK by ~£250 worth and India by ~₹15,000+ at the base config, and US retailer discounts widen the gap further.
- 501 Original Fit Jeans (Levi's) — 74.99 USD — The definitive American jean at its home price — UK shoppers pay nearly double, and US sales/outlets take it under $50.
- Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG (Nike / Jordan) — 185 USD — Jordan retail in the US undercuts the UK by ~$40 a pair and dodges India's scarcity premium; outlets sweeten it further.
- Tabby Shoulder Bag 26 (Coach) — 475 USD — Affordable-luxury US brands are cheapest on home turf — the identical Tabby costs $100-135 more in India or the UK, and the outlet ecosystem around it is the real jackpot.
- Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein (5 lb) (Optimum Nutrition) — 79.99 USD — US supplements cost 40-50% of Indian import prices and you're guaranteed the real thing — the classic NRI suitcase item for a reason.
- Signature 3-Wick Candle (Bath & Body Works) — 26.95 USD — At US sale prices (~$8-12) you pay a third of what the identical candle costs in India — the definitive cheap-and-cheerful gift haul.
- Switch 2 Console (Nintendo) — 449.99 USD — Not officially sold in India (grey market charges ~$600) and ~$90 cheaper than the UK — and US buyers have until Sept 1 before Nintendo's own price hike.
- 1985 Regular Fit Polo (outlet) (Tommy Hilfiger) — 29.99 USD — American-brand basics at outlet prices are a third of UK retail and well under Indian MRP — this is what outlet-mall pilgrimages are for.
- Rambler 40 oz Tumbler with Handle (YETI) — 42 USD — An American outdoor icon that costs 30% more in the UK and double via Indian importers — plus it's a genuinely useful souvenir.
- Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon (750ml) (Buffalo Trace Distillery) — 29.99 USD — World-class Kentucky bourbon at half the UK price and a third of the Indian price, from the country that invented it.
- National Park Wool Blanket (Yellowstone) (Pendleton Woolen Mills) — 295 USD — A genuine made-in-USA heirloom tied to the national parks — the anti-fridge-magnet souvenir.
- Trader Joe's American Snack Haul (Trader Joe's) — 30 USD — The cheapest authentic souvenir in America — a $30 bag of cult-favorite groceries no one back home can get.
- Vintage Made-in-USA Levi's (thrifted) (Levi's (vintage/secondhand)) — 45 USD — America is the source pond for the global vintage denim trade — hunting your own made-in-USA 501s beats paying a Tokyo or London markup for the same jeans.
