Vintage Anatolian Wool Kilim (~120x180 cm)
Anatolia is the kilim's homeland — buying from the source, with honest haggling, lands a genuine handwoven piece at a third of Western retail.
Price: 15000 TRY (Handwoven 4x6 ft vintage wool kilim from an honest Istanbul dealer, ~$250-450 range (12,000-21,000 TRY) after negotiation; simple new kilims from ~5,000 TRY, fine old pieces far more. Dealer quote — kilims have no posted prices.)
Where to buy: Established dealers in and around the Grand Bazaar (Zincirli Han) and Sultanahmet with fixed premises and international shipping — never buy from a tout who 'walks you to his cousin's shop'

- Honest buying guidance: unless you know rugs, assume the first price is 40-60% negotiable, never buy on the first visit, and never buy under carpet-tour/hotel-tout pressure — commissions of 30%+ are baked into those prices
- Flat-weave test: a real kilim shows the identical pattern on both sides; check for wool (warm, slightly oily feel) vs shiny synthetics, and vegetable dyes (colors slightly varied, abrash streaks) vs flat chemical color
- Export rules: antiques over 100 years old cannot leave Turkey without Ministry of Culture certification — reputable dealers supply a certificate stating the piece is NOT antique, plus an invoice; keep both for customs
- Carpets/kilims carry 10% VAT and dealers who ship handle tax-free paperwork; hand-carry smaller kilims (they fold) rather than trusting shipping promises from unknown shops
