- Real Talavera is a protected denomination of origin (DO4): only certified workshops in Puebla/Tlaxcala using the 16th-century process may use the name — look for the holographic certification sticker and workshop signature on the base
- Uriarte holds certification DO4-1, the first ever granted (1998)
- Genuine pieces use only six mineral pigments on tin-glazed earthenware; a MX$150 'talavera' mug in a beach shop is Dolores Hidalgo majolica or Chinese ceramic — pretty, but not Talavera
