# Barro negro (black clay) burnished vase

A craft that exists in exactly one Oaxacan town — buying at the source workshop costs a quarter of US gallery prices and puts money directly in artisan hands.

Price: 500 MXN (Typical price for a 20-30cm burnished, pierced-work vase at San Bartolo Coyotepec workshops, 2026)

Where to buy: Workshops and the artisan market in San Bartolo Coyotepec (20 min from Oaxaca City), including the original Doña Rosa family workshop

- The metallic black sheen comes from burnishing with quartz and low-oxygen firing — a technique popularized by Doña Rosa in the 1950s; matte pieces are the older utilitarian style
- Burnished barro negro is decorative, not food-safe or watertight — don't plan to cook with it
- Extremely fragile: have the workshop double-box it, or carry it on
