• The metallic black sheen comes from burnishing with quartz and low-oxygen firing — a technique popularized by Doña Rosa in the 1950s; matte pieces are the older utilitarian style
• Burnished barro negro is decorative, not food-safe or watertight — don't plan to cook with it
