Thuya Wood Box / Marquetry (Essaouira)
Essaouira's signature craft — a wood that exists nowhere else, worked by the same families for generations, still cheap at the source
Price: 200 MAD (Medium inlaid thuya burl jewelry box, settled (honest range 100-400 MAD; small boxes from 50 MAD, chess sets and trays 400-1,000 MAD))
Where to buy: Woodworkers' souk under Essaouira's Skala ramparts — the workshops are in the old cannon vaults; buy where you smell the cedar-like resin and see the lathes

- Thuya burl grows only in this corner of North Africa — the knotted 'bird's-eye' root grain can't be faked, but veneer-on-pine boxes exist: check the inside and base show the same burl
- Scratch-sniff an inconspicuous spot: real thuya releases a distinctive resinous scent for years
- Boxes with lemonwood/mother-of-pearl inlay cost more; sloppy glue lines around inlay = rushed tourist grade
- Sustainability note: buy from the artisan cooperative (Coopérative Artisanale des Marqueteurs) which sources from managed forests
