# Taliouine Saffron (per gram, PDO region)

One of the world's great saffrons at a quarter of Western prices — prized by chefs for its safranal punch, and your dirhams go straight to Anti-Atlas farming families

Price: 40 MAD (Per gram of genuine Taliouine threads at cooperative/reputable shops (verified range: 30-45 MAD/g genuine; 15 MAD/g souk offers are a red flag for dyed fakes))

Where to buy: Taliouine cooperatives if you're routing through the Anti-Atlas; otherwise sealed-jar cooperative saffron at herboristeries in Marrakech — never open-tray souk saffron

- Water test: real Taliouine threads release golden color SLOWLY over 10-15 minutes and stay intact; fakes (dyed safflower or corn silk) bleed instantly and fall apart
- Real threads are deep crimson with lighter orange tips — uniform bright-red everything is dyed
- Anything under ~20 MAD/g is not saffron — the flowers alone cost more than that to pick
- 1-2 grams is a year's home supply; buy sealed with harvest date for customs
- Food = excluded from VAT refund, so just pay cash at the coop
