Pure Cosmetic Argan Oil 100ml (women's cooperative, UCFA-style)
Morocco's liquid gold at a third of Western retail — but only if you buy the real thing from the cooperatives that actually make it
Price: 150 MAD (100ml cold-pressed cosmetic grade at a certified women's cooperative (coop range 100-150 MAD/100ml); culinary (toasted-kernel) grade ~120-200 MAD per 250ml)
Where to buy: Certified women's cooperatives on the Marrakech-Essaouira road, or fixed-price pharmacy/coop shops in town — not souk stalls

- The 40-80 MAD 'argan oil' in souk stalls is almost always cut with sunflower oil or is outright fake — a real 100ml costs the coop more than that to produce
- Tests: real cosmetic argan is golden-yellow, nutty-smelling, absorbs into skin in minutes without greasy film; fridge test — pure oil turns cloudy/thick when chilled
- Culinary argan (from toasted kernels) is darker with a strong hazelnut aroma — never buy 'culinary' that smells of nothing
- Buy from a cooperative where you can see women cracking nuts and ask for the ONSSA label; your money goes to Berber women's wages
- As a food product, culinary argan is excluded from the VAT refund anyway — pay cash, keep it sealed for customs
