South Korea
Seoul is a 24/7 retail playground where K-beauty megastores, luxury eyewear temples, K-pop record shops and all-night fashion malls sit minutes apart on the subway.
Tax-free / duty-free
Immediate Tax Refund. At participating stores (Olive Young, department stores, Daiso, many brand flagships, even some CU/GS25 convenience stores) foreign tourists staying under 6 months show a physical passport at checkout and the 10% VAT is deducted on the spot for purchases under ₩1,000,000. Above the immediate-refund caps, take the tax-free receipt and unused goods to airport/downtown refund kiosks (Global Blue, Global Tax Free) before check-in.
What to buy in South Korea
- Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence 100ml (COSRX) — 19660 KRW — The global K-beauty bestseller at source: roughly $14 out the door after VAT refund versus $25 list in the US and ₹1,450 in India.
- Lip Sleeping Mask EX 20g (Laneige) — 22000 KRW — Cult overnight lip treatment about 30-40% cheaper than US/India once tax refund and Korea-only bundle sets are counted, plus exclusive flavors.
- First Care Activating Serum 90ml (Yunjo Essence) (Sulwhasoo) — 140000 KRW — Korea's flagship luxury serum is nearly 30% cheaper at home before the VAT refund, and duty-free stacks the discount further.
- Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ 50ml (Beauty of Joseon) — 14000 KRW — The internet's favorite Korean sunscreen at half the Indian price: about ₩12,700 (~$9) after VAT refund versus ₹1,570 on Nykaa and $18 on Amazon.
- Zero Pore Pad 2.0 (70 pads) (medicube) — 24900 KRW — Viral pore-care pads where Korea-only value sets bring the effective price to roughly half the US one.
- Sunglasses (core acetate models, e.g. Her/Lang/Kunst) (Gentle Monster) — 330000 KRW — Korea's own It-brand eyewear: roughly $100 per pair cheaper than US retail, with first access to new collections.
- Galaxy S25 256GB (unlocked, 자급제) (Samsung) — 1187000 KRW — For fans of Korea-exclusive colorways and flagship-store bundles it can pencil out after the VAT refund — but it's the weakest 'saver' here, so run the numbers first.
- Color contact lenses (1-month, per pair) (OLENS) — 20000 KRW — Korea is the world capital of color lenses — the same OLENS pairs cost a third to half of import prices abroad, with in-store fitting help.
- MLB Korea ball cap (NY/LA monogram & varsity lines) (MLB Korea (F&F)) — 45000 KRW — The Seoul-street staple cap at source price — 30-40% under what proxies and resellers charge, in colorways never exported.
- K-pop album, standard version (first-press with POB benefits) (Various (HYBE/SM/JYP/YG artists)) — 22000 KRW — 30-40% cheaper than export pricing, with first-press versions, store-exclusive photocards and chart-counting purchases you simply can't get abroad.
- Hong Sam Jung Everytime 3000mg red ginseng sticks (30-day) (Cheong Kwan Jang (Jung Kwan Jang / KGC)) — 77000 KRW — Korea's national tonic from the 120-year-old state-rooted brand, ~30-40% under US import pricing and in gift packaging Koreans actually give.
- Craft makgeolli (regional small-brewery bottle) (Various (Boksoondoga, Haechang, Songmyeongseop etc.)) — 12000 KRW — A genuinely untranslatable souvenir — hundreds of regional live rice brews that legally and logistically never leave Korea.
- Korean stationery haul (Monami pens, memo pads, deco stickers) (Monami / ArtBox / various) — 15000 KRW — Korea's stationery culture is world-class and absurdly cheap at source — the same pads and pens sell for 3-4x on Etsy and import shops.
- Hanji (mulberry paper) crafts — notebooks, lamps, jewelry boxes (Insadong artisan shops / KCDF) — 25000 KRW — A thousand-year-old paper craft you can only buy authentically at source, from the actual makers, at non-gallery prices.
- Convenience store & Market Kurly snack haul (HBAF / Nongshim / Binggrae / Orion) — 20000 KRW — The classic suitcase-filler: iconic snacks at a third of import prices, including flavors that never leave the peninsula.

Customs
- IN: Duty-free allowance for returning residents is ₹50,000 of goods plus 2L of alcohol — a serious K-beauty haul, a Samsung phone or a stack of K-pop albums blows past it fast, and excess is dutied at ~38.5%. Packaged red ginseng and food supplements are fine in personal-use quantities; electronics should be declared if boxed and new.
- US: US$800 personal exemption and 1L alcohol (21+). Commercially packaged red ginseng extract/tea is generally admissible but MUST be declared as a food/agricultural product; fresh ginseng root is restricted. Ten-plus copies of the same K-pop album can be treated as commercial imports. Colored contact lenses are prescription devices under FDA rules — bring them for personal use only.
