Spain
Home turf of Inditex fashion, world-class leather and a pantry of DOP treasures — with Europe's most generous tax-free rules.
Tax-free / duty-free
VAT refund (DIVA). Spain abolished the old €90.16 threshold — any purchase from €0.01 qualifies if you reside outside the EU. Ask the store for a tax-free (DIVA) form, then before checking bags at your last EU exit point scan the form's barcode at a DIVA kiosk (Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, etc.) for digital customs validation — no stamp queue needed. Collect the refund via Global Blue/Planet/store card, cash desk, or the retailer's own scheme. Goods must leave the EU within 3 months of purchase.
What to buy in Spain
- ZW Collection Linen-Blend Blazer (Zara) — 49.95 EUR — Buying Zara in Spain is the textbook home-turf saver: the identical garment costs roughly half the US price, and the VAT refund applies even to a single €50 blazer.
- Nappa Leather Jacket (Massimo Dutti) — 299 EUR — Massimo Dutti's nappa leather is the quality-per-euro sweet spot of Spanish high street, and home-market pricing plus VAT refund beats US pricing by ~30%.
- Small Puzzle Bag (classic calfskin) (Loewe) — 2900 EUR — Buying Loewe leather at the source is the single biggest money-saver in Spain — four figures cheaper than US retail once the VAT refund lands.
- Pelotas Ariel Icon Sneakers (Camper) — 210 EUR — Spain's most famous shoe brand at home prices — the Pelotas is a design classic and the ES-vs-US gap plus tax-free makes it a genuine saver.
- Carina Wedge Espadrilles (Castañer) — 115 EUR — The Carina is THE wedge espadrille (Castañer invented it for YSL), and at €115 in Spain vs $235 in the US it's a buy-at-source no-brainer.
- Fotoprotector Fusion Water Magic SPF 50, 50ml (ISDIN) — 26.95 EUR — Spanish pharmacy skincare is a cult saver: superior EU sunscreen technology at a third of what the closest US equivalent costs, from the category's leading Barcelona brand.
- Azafrán DOP La Mancha, 1g (Premium, boxed) (La Melguiza) — 12.3 EUR — La Mancha DOP saffron is the world's most strictly certified — buying it at source guarantees authenticity that's nearly impossible to verify abroad, at prices well below export retail.
- Jamón 100% Ibérico de Bellota, hand-sliced 80g vacuum pack (Cinco Jotas (5J)) — 33.5 EUR — Acorn-fed 100% ibérico is Spain's supreme edible souvenir, and hand-carved vacuum packs are the only travel-practical format — just know your destination's meat rules.
- Family Reserve Picual EVOO, 500ml (Castillo de Canena) — 19.5 EUR — Spain produces half the world's olive oil, and flagship Picual at origin costs half its export price — the highest quality-to-weight souvenir in the country.
- Turrón de Jijona 'Calidad Suprema', 250g (1880) — 12.5 EUR — Turrón is Alicante's 500-year-old almond-and-honey craft; the Supreme grade at Spanish prices is a fraction of what Spanish delis abroad charge.
- Heart of Spain Flamenco Woman Figurine (Lladró) — 850 EUR — Lladró is Valencia's porcelain house of global renown; at source you get the widest catalog, factory outlet deals, and a meaningful VAT refund.
- Tío Pepe Fino Sherry (Palomino Fino), 75cl (González Byass) — 7.95 EUR — Sherry is Andalusia's great underpriced wine — iconic bottles at supermarket prices that cost 3x in export markets.
- Handmade Valencian Hand Fan (abanico artesanal) (Abanicos Carbonell) — 25 EUR — The abanico is Valencia's living craft — a 200-year-old family workshop selling authentic hand-painted fans for the price of a tourist lunch.
- Classic Handmade Flat Espadrilles (La Manual Alpargatera) — 14 EUR — The espadrille is Spain's oldest shoe, and this Barcelona institution hand-makes the real thing for less than the cost of a taxi to the airport.

Customs
- US: CRITICAL: jamón ibérico and ALL pork/meat products are prohibited from entering the US in passenger baggage — CBP will seize them and can fine you (typically $300+), even vacuum-sealed with receipts. Buy USDA-approved Spanish jamón from US importers instead. Cheese (hard, commercially packaged), olive oil, saffron, turrón and wine/sherry are fine to declare. Personal exemption $800; 1L alcohol duty-free (more is usually allowed with small duty).
- IN: Duty-free allowance ₹50,000 plus 2L of alcohol — a bottle of sherry or vermouth fits, but multiple Loewe/luxury items above the allowance attract ~38.5% duty if declared. Meat products like jamón technically require a sanitary import permit and can be confiscated — carry at your own risk. Saffron, olive oil, turrón and fashion within allowance are unproblematic.
