Egyptian perfume oils / attars by the ounce (lotus, musk, amber, jasmine)
Egypt grows and distills real perfume botanicals for the global fragrance houses — by-the-ounce oils at street prices are a fraction of Western per-ml fragrance costs, IF you haggle hard.
Price: 500 EGP (Honest settled price E£300-700 (~US$6-14) per ounce for decent oils AFTER haggling; opening quotes of E£1,500-2,500/oz are the script — settle at 30-50%)
Where to buy: Perfume shops throughout Khan el-Khalili and Luxor souk; ask them to dab pure oil on skin, not on a card

- THE haggling arena: the tea-and-theater perfume shop pitch is a Cairo institution — enjoy it, then pay a third of the first number
- Quality varies wildly; some 'pure lotus' is diluted with DPG carrier — pure oil shouldn't feel watery or smell of alcohol
- Ornate hand-blown glass bottles are sold separately and cheaply (E£50-150 small) — pretty, but pad them obsessively for the flight
- Buy oils the region does best: Egyptian jasmine and rose are genuine export crops (Egypt supplies the French perfume industry)
