Genuine papyrus painting (certified institute)
A 5,000-year-old craft revived in the 1960s — but only worth buying real, and Egypt is the only place you can watch it made and buy certified for the price of a poster.
Price: 1000 EGP (Honest range: small genuine hand-painted pieces E£300-800; medium quality works E£800-3,000 (~US$16-61) at certified institutes; street 'papyrus' at E£50 is banana leaf)
Where to buy: Dr. Ragab's Papyrus Institute (Giza, Nile-side) and certified papyrus institutes in Cairo/Luxor — fixed-ish prices, demonstrations included; NOT street vendors

- REAL vs FAKE test: genuine papyrus shows a criss-cross lattice of strips when held to light, is translucent, flexible, and won't crack when gently rolled or dampened; banana-leaf/rice-paper fakes are uniform, darker, brittle, and tear like paper
- Certified institutes demonstrate the ancient pressing process and issue certificates — worth the modest premium over street fakes that are literally worth nothing
- Antiquities warning applies in spirit: anything sold as 'ancient papyrus' is either fake or a crime — all legal papyrus is modern
- Rolls into a tube; the institute will pack it for flight
