Canada
Heritage outdoor brands at home-market prices, Québec maple country, Niagara icewine, and a rebuilt Hudson's Bay stripe story — polite, plaid, and best shopped where provincial sales tax is lowest.
Tax-free / duty-free
None — rebate abolished 2007. Canada scrapped its Visitor Rebate Program in 2007 — there is NO tax refund for tourists, period (ignore outdated blogs). Like the US, shelf prices exclude tax; GST/HST/PST is added at the register and varies by province. Nothing to claim at the airport.
What to buy in Canada

- Organic Original Sweatpant (Roots) — 78 CAD — Canada's cozy national uniform at home prices — the genuine article beats airport 'Canada' hoodies

- Pure maple syrup, Grade A Dark/Amber 540 ml can (Québec producers (e.g., Cent Acres, Ferme Martinette)) — 9.99 CAD — The definitive Canadian souvenir — verified under C$10 a can from producers, half US price, a fifth of India's
- BC smoked sockeye salmon (shelf-stable sealed pack, 150 g) (SeaChange / St. Jean's (BC)) — 19.99 CAD — Vancouver's edible signature in a suitcase-proof format — US-friendly, India-risky, so know your route

- Hudson's Bay 100% wool point blanket (queen) (Hudson's Bay Stripes (Canadian Tire)) — 450 CAD — A 350-year icon that nearly vanished in 2025 — the relaunched wool blanket is both heirloom and history lesson

- Ketchup chips + Coffee Crisp snack haul (Lay's / Old Dutch / Nestlé Canada) — 15 CAD — The cheapest authentic gift in Canada — cult snacks locals actually eat, unavailable back home
- Canadian-made wool tuque (pom-pom toque) (Roots / Tuck Shop Trading Co.) — 38 CAD — Cheap, useful, packable and unmistakably Canadian — the wearable souvenir that isn't a joke gift
- Neige Première ice cider 375 ml (Domaine Neige (Québec)) — 25.05 CAD — Québec's under-the-radar liquid gold — icewine luxury at half the price, still virtually unknown abroad
Where locals shop
- Queen West & Eaton Centre, Toronto: Roots and Arc'teryx flagships, Lululemon, CF Eaton Centre department stores, indie boutiques westward
- Jean-Talon Market & Mile End, Montréal: Québec maple producers selling by the can, ice cider, bagels, and the lowest-hype authentic food shopping in Canada
- Granville Island & Robson Street, Vancouver: BC smoked salmon, Indigenous-owned galleries, Lululemon's hometown flagship, Arc'teryx brand stores
- Niagara-on-the-Lake wine route, Niagara, ON: Inniskillin, Peller and Reif icewine tastings at cellar-door prices; VQA-certified bottles
- Banff Avenue, Banff, AB: Canada Goose, tuques and mountain-town flannel with only 5% tax — Alberta has no provincial sales tax
Customs
- US: US$800 personal exemption per person (48+ hrs abroad); Canadian-origin goods are generally USMCA duty-free above that anyway. 1L alcohol duty-free at 21+ — a couple of icewine half-bottles are fine, declare them. Commercially sealed smoked/retort salmon and maple syrup are admissible; declare all food. CRITICAL: the US Marine Mammal Protection Act bans sealskin and whalebone items entirely — buy Inuit prints/stone carvings instead.
- IN: ₹50,000 general duty-free allowance; 2L alcohol. Sealed maple syrup, chips and chocolate are fine to declare and carry. Skip smoked salmon for India — animal-origin foods face sanitary import restrictions and may be confiscated. Icewine within the 2L limit is a superb India gift (barely sold there; imported dessert wines carry 150% duty). Art/prints over the allowance attract ~38.5% effective duty — carry gallery invoices.
