Brazil
Beach-to-bar shopping at the source: Havaianas and Melissa for pocket change, world-class bikinis and Osklen streetwear, certified colored gemstones, and artisanal cachaca, coffee and acai you simply cannot get this fresh or this cheap anywhere else.
Tax-free / duty-free
None operational. Brazil has no national tax-free shopping scheme for tourists. Rio de Janeiro state approved a pioneering ICMS 'tax free' pilot for foreign visitors (announced 2025), but as of July 2026 it is still not operational pending selection of a refund operator.. It doesn't yet. All displayed prices already include taxes; you pay what the tag says. If Rio's pilot goes live it will require in-person purchases at accredited stores paid with a foreign-issued card, excluding food, drink and services.
What to buy in Brazil

- Melissa Possession jelly sandal (Melissa (Grendene)) — 189.9 BRL — Cult Brazilian jelly shoes at home prices - identical product, roughly 65% cheaper than US retail.
- Lenny Niemeyer classic two-piece bikini (Lenny Niemeyer) — 598 BRL — Brazil's most prestigious swimwear label costs roughly 60% less at home than in the US resort boutiques that import it.
- Osklen classic organic-cotton t-shirt (Osklen) — 298 BRL — Carioca luxury-casual at source: the same pieces cost roughly double once they cross the equator.
- Granado glycerin liquid soap 300ml (lavanda / Terrapeutics lines) (Granado (est. 1870)) — 34.5 BRL — A 150-year-old Brazilian pharmacy brand at home prices - the same soaps and colognes cost several times more abroad.
- Certified Brazilian gemstone pendant (aquamarine / imperial topaz / tourmaline) (H.Stern / Amsterdam Sauer) — 4900 BRL — Certified colored gemstones at origin run 20-40% below US boutique prices - but only via the certified houses, never the street.
- Weber Haus Extra Premium aged cachaca 750ml (6-year, organic) (Weber Haus) — 283.9 BRL — World-award-winning aged cachaca that barely exports - the depth of the artisanal category exists only inside Brazil.

- Brazil national team home jersey 2026/27 (fan version) (Nike / CBF) — 449.99 BRL — The most iconic shirt in football, bought in the country that gives it meaning - just make sure it's the real one.
- Canga de praia (Brazilian beach sarong) (Farm Rio / Ipanema market artisans) — 149 BRL — The most Brazilian object on the beach, at prices from pocket change to designer - all far below what exported 'Brazilian pareos' cost abroad.
- Berimbau (capoeira bow instrument, artisan-made) (Bahian artisans (Elo7 / Mercado Modelo)) — 250 BRL — The sound of capoeira, hand-made in Bahia for half of what US world-music importers charge.
- Gourmet brigadeiro gift box (12-20 units) (Maria Brigadeiro / local confeitarias) — 110 BRL — Brazil's national sweet, either as a same-week indulgence or a foolproof DIY kit that recreates it anywhere on earth.
Where locals shop
- Ipanema (Rua Visconde de Piraja + Hippie Fair), Rio de Janeiro: Bikini boutiques (Lenny Niemeyer flagship), Osklen, Havaianas stores, Sunday Hippie Fair for cangas and crafts
- Rua Oscar Freire / Jardins, São Paulo: Melissa Galeria flagship, Osklen, Granado, H.Stern and top Brazilian designer flagships
- Centro Histórico (Granado 1870 flagship + Confeitaria Colombo area), Rio de Janeiro: Granado/Phebo heritage pharmacy flagship, classic Carioca souvenirs
- Mercado Municipal & Rua 25 de Março, São Paulo: Coffee, sweets and food gifts; 25 de Março is cheap but rife with fake jerseys - buy football shirts only from Nike/club stores
Customs
- US: US$800 personal exemption; 1L of alcohol duty-free at 21+ (extra cachaca bottles usually incur small duty - often still worth it). Keep H.Stern/Amsterdam Sauer gem certificates and receipts for jewelry - declare if over exemption. Acai powder, coffee beans and sealed sweets are fine; fresh acai, fruit and meat products are not.
- IN: Rs 50,000 duty-free allowance and 2L of alcohol; beyond that ~38.5% effective duty. Gold and jewelry are scrutinized - carry gemstone certificates and invoices, and declare high-value pieces on arrival. Packaged coffee, acai powder and guarana are generally fine; commercial quantities need clearance.
